Traditional Chinese Medicine

What is Acupuncture?

Medical acupuncture is also called dry needling and it is a form of modern acupuncture which is based on an understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology of the human body (Dr.Campbell, 2006). Modern acupuncture uses traditional diagnostic methods used by western practitioners. This form of acupuncture has shown to be particularly effective in reducing pain. Research has postulated that dry needling effects the pain pathways in the spinal cord. The needling affects the transmission of pain from the brain and the back of the spinal cord. This research is called the gate theory of pain and helps to stimulate the pathways that close the pain pathways in the spinal cord helping to reduce the sensation of pain (Wall, 2000).

Dry Needling is also used to treat knots which can be found in tight muscles and can often cause pain; they are called Myofascial trigger points. These knots can help to produce and maintain a pain cycle. Dry needling of trigger points helps to reduce a local twitch response, which is an involuntary spinal cord reflex causing the tight band of muscles to contract. Dry needling is believed to improve the local twitch response as well as by releasing natural opioids in the body.

Thus dry needling is researched to help reduce pain and reduce the twitch response in knots which can be found in tight muscles. At Richmond Osteopaths all our practitioners are qualified to provide Medical Acupuncture or dry needling. In addition, all the needles are individually packaged and sterilised to ensure your health.
