Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a Doctor’s referral to get an appointment?

No letter of referral is required unless specified by your private medical insurance company (if applicable). Self-referral is permitted for private physiotherapy.

How do I make an appointment?

It is possible to make an appointment by contacting us on 020  8948  7171. or via email at info@richmondosteopaths.co.uk

How long will my appointment be?

Initial appointments will take about 45 minutes; this appointment will include both assessment and initial treatment. Follow up appointments are between thirty and 45 minutes long.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

You will need to wear or bring suitable clothing to change into, for example if you have a problem with your lower back or leg, a pair of shorts would be appropriate. In the case of a shoulder, neck or upper back problem, it may be necessary to remove your shirt or top to expose the relevant area.

If you are paying via private medical insurance, you will need to bring your policy details and authorization number.

If you have had any investigations related to your condition, please bring along copies of any reports or images you have, or are able to access, to assist your Physiotherapist during your assessment.

How qualified is my physiotherapist, osteopath or sports therapist?

All of our therapists, as part of maintaining their professional registration, have to provide evidence of continuing professional development. At Richmond Osteopaths you can expect to see a therapist with many years of experience in treating patients with musculoskeletal injuries and who has demonstrated a strong commitment to professional development through reflection, up to date awareness of the current evidence-base, training and formal further education.

Initial session costs £50; follow up sessions also cost £50. There is a package deal of 5 treatments that cost £225 saving £25.

We accept cash and all credit cards except American Express. We ask all patients to pay after each session. You can request a receipt.

A full charge will usually be made for missed appointments or if we receive less than 24 hours notice of cancellation.

Do you accept payment via private medical insurance?

Richmond Osteopaths is covered by many of the major private medical insurance companies. We submit claims directly to your insurance company. It is worth noting that many policies require an annual excess to be paid which may mean that you have to finance part of the cost yourself.

Prior to making an appointment at Richmond Osteopaths we recommend that you contact your insurance company to clarify: Whether your policy covers you for physiotherapy, osteopathy or sports therapy and if a medical referral is required. If you have a restriction on the number of treatments allowed or time scale for treatments.

Please bring your insurance details and authorization number to your initial visit, failure to do so will result in you having to pay for the session. You will be responsible for any costs not covered by your insurance company.

What will happen at my appointment?

Your initial appointment will firstly involve completing a personal details database. This will be followed by a discussion regarding your problem. Your therapist will be asking specific questions aimed at identifying the nature of the problem. A physical examination will then occur of the relevant area. This may include getting you to move the injured region and your therapist completing specific tests. It may be necessary to look at the areas above and below your injury in order to aid diagnosis. Once complete, your therapist will explain the findings and their relevance to your problem. They will provide you with a diagnosis at this point if possible and an estimated timescale for recovery. You will also be able to ask any questions that you may have. Treatment will then commence, followed by provision of a home exercise program, if appropriate.

At a follow up appointment, the initial physical examination tests may be reviewed before further treatment commences. Your home exercise program may then be modified or progressed, as appropriate.

Will I be expected to do anything following my appointment at Richmond Osteopaths?

It is quite common to be sent home with further work to do following your appointment in the form of advice and exercises. This is to reinforce the benefits of the treatment you have received and to achieve further improvement.
