Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)?

CTS is an annoying ache and numbness in the palm of the hand. It is normally worse during the night and first thing in the morning. The tunnel in the wrist where the medium nerve runs through becomes too narrow for the nerve compressing and irritating it. At night time when you are asleep the wrists become relaxed and bend forwards narrowing the tunnel further. There are a number of reasons why it happens RSI of the wrist is the most common, hormonal changes during pregnancy, obesity and hand trauma.

How we treat CTS at Richmond Osteopaths

We may advise on night splints on a short term basis depending on the severity of the symptoms. We increase the size of the tunnel by stretching and mobilising the muscles and joints of the tunnel. The biomechanics of the upper limb and back will be analysed and then treated to reduce any strain going through the wrist. Postural advice and exercises are given. Like any muscle and joint pain, CTS is curable and will get better.
